Thalapothichil Therapy

Thalapothichil is a special procedure of application of medicated paste on the head. Thalapothichil is also called as Shirolepa (an ointment to head/ head pack). It is the traditional Ayurveda treatment which is very effective in various psychosomatic disorders. It falls in the category of cooling treatments. Thalapothichil is a specialized Ayurvedic procedure used to treat various ailments like scalp disorders, neurological disorders etc.

The person is made to sit in an easy position.
A gentle oil massage is given to head with specific medicated oil.
An herbal paste is freshly prepared by cooking it with the buttermilk after carefully assessing the condition of the person.
The paste is applied over the scalp in a layer of thickness of about 0.5 to 1 centimeter, leaving a small central portion. Medicated oil is filled in this groove. The paste is then covered with leaves (plantain or lotus leaf) and cloth leaving the groove open.
At the end of the procedure the paste is removed; a gentle head massage is given.
30 minutes to 45 minutes depending on the condition.
The scalp is formed by five layers that is skin, connective tissue, aponeurosis, loose areolar layer and pericardium the dense subcutaneous connective tissue has the richest cutaneous blood supply in the body.
The cell membrane which are made up of phospholipids, absorbs the lipid soluble medicinal extracts and enter in to the blood circulation.
Since there is a procedure of Abhyanga before Thalapothichil where the medicated oil applied over the scalp and mild massage is done due to which the heat is generated and vasodilatation happens which allows the lipids in medicated oil to absorb the active ingredients of the medicated paste which is covered over the scalp containing various pharmacological action like antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, anti-depressants, intellectual properties.
These medicinal extract will cross the cell membrane and enter into the circulation. Here the covering of herbal leaf plays a vital role in completing the procedure in order to maintain adequate temperature throughout the procedure.
