Virechana Treatment In Ayurveda

Virechana is an Ayurvedic therapy that is one of the five sacred Panchakarma therapies which can heal and purify the mind and body from the inside. ‘Virechana’ means purgation or any substance that can induce purgation in the body.

Virechana is a carefully crafted process that collects all of the body’s ama or toxins, concentrates them in the small intestine, and eliminates them. It helps the body to remain free of the inflamed Pitta Dosha and the toxic disease-causing symptoms that come with it. Furthermore, Virechana causes the body to form new Pitta, which aids digestion and metabolism. The various herbs used in the treatment act as laxatives and decongestants that cleanse the colon, stomach, sweat glands, liver, and spleen. Virechana treatment in Ayurveda is provided after assessing the tolerance and disease of an individual. It is beneficial to treat all ailments caused by Pitta aggravation, such as hyperacidity, migraine, liver cleansing, detoxification of the body, and skin-related diseases such as eczema.

Advantages of Virechana Treatment

  • Eliminates toxins from the body
  • Boosts the immune system
  • Improves libido
  • Enhances the digestive system
  • Promotes skin health
  • Removes the Doshas from the body without any complications

The Procedure of Virechana Treatment

Virechana therapy in Ayurveda is a simple procedure. The individual should first undergo Vamana or vomiting treatment, followed by Samsarjana (a special dietary regimen), and Snehakarma or oleation therapy, before the actual process. After that, a three-day oil massage and sweating treatment are given to the individual. Then, Virechana is performed.

When the Virechana treatment begins, a drug is given to the patient. The medication and its dosage are decided based on the individual’s Kostha or bowels, physical constitution, vitiated Doshas, and any diseases they could be suffering from. The patient is then given ghee, which is processed with different Kshara (alkalis) and Lavana (salts) to expand their digestive capacity before the purification therapies.

Different kinds of herbs are given to the patient based on the type of Dosha. The purgative herb used for Virechana varies in dosage from person to person. A mild purgative medicine is used when a person is weak, has little Dosha imbalance, has done purification therapy before, and the nature of their Kostha is unknown. Purgation begins shortly after the medication is administered. Since it occurs frequently, the individual should continue to drink lukewarm water to aid the process and avoid dehydration.
